Companies in today’s increasingly competitive global marketplace are focusing their efforts on outstanding environmental performance as a business imperative.

The Center for Environmental Leadership in Business (CELB) works with our corporate partners to improve their business practices, creating and implementing strategies that combine bold commitments to sustainability with practical solutions that deliver benefits to the bottom line and the environment.

Our role

CELB leads CI’s efforts to promote sustainable business practices by working with companies — particularly those that have extensive global footprints in industries like mining, energy and agriculture — to ensure that the production of vital goods and services is sustainable and does not undercut nature’s ability to support humanity.

Our plan

Improve industry practices

Even the most conscientious business has an impact on the planet. CELB collaborates with companies, encouraging them to improve their business practices and invest in conservation.

Promote sustainable sourcing

All products have a source, and often, that source comes from nature. CELB works with corporate leaders and industry associations to help ensure that those sources are sustainable.

Invest in conservation innovations

Keeping forests standing is the most cost-effective way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. CELB provides our partners innovative ways to reduce global carbon emissions through forest carbon offsets that provide benefits for local communities and preserve tropical forests.

Innovating to advance corporate sustainability

Learning and collaboration can accelerate and scale up our impacts. CELB helps convene companies, governments and other stakeholders to innovate and advance our efforts.

Programs

CELB offers a wide range of products and services to our corporate partners, focusing our efforts on industries with the greatest impact on ecosystems: food and agriculture, oil and gas, mining, retail and consumer products.

Sustainable Food & Agriculture Markets

CELB works with leaders across the agricultural value chain to meet growing demands for food, fuel and water in ways that preserve the forests, fresh water, oceans and other natural resources on which all people depend. We help companies in agribusiness, retail, and food and consumer products develop and apply practical tools that integrate conservation principles into business decisions. CELB assists companies in creating incentives for widespread adoption of good farming and conservation practices and landscape planning to protect and restore healthy ecosystems.

Responsible Mining & Energy

CELB works in partnership with major mining, oil and gas companies and industry associations to promote sustainable business practices — so that the world continues to have access to the resources we need to grow our global economy without destroying the environment. We advise extractives companies to avoid impacts on nature wherever possible, and to offset the impacts on natural habitats and biodiversity when they do occur, in order to contribute to conservation and help improve livelihoods for local communities.

Conservation Innovations & Investments

CELB cultivates partnerships with leading corporations and influential thought leaders dedicated to taking a leadership role on outstanding environmental performance and the preservation of natural capital. For companies looking to reduce their carbon footprint, supporting forest carbon activities can powerfully complement internal actions that reduce emissions. In addition to addressing one of the leading causes of global climate change, protecting and restoring forests provides a suite of social and environmental benefits, including supporting the well-being of local communities by ensuring the continued delivery of important ecosystem services that intact forests provide.
