Statement From Conservation International CEO Dr. M. Sanjayan on 10 US National Monuments Under Threat
September 18, 2017
According to a report by The Washington Post, the Trump Administration has recommended removing protections from 10 national monuments under review, including the Pacific Remote Islands and Rose Atoll Marine National Monuments. This recommendation runs counter to the views of millions of Americans and the overwhelming global consensus on ocean conservation.
The world understands that we need more protection of our oceans, not less. Just in the last two months, we have seen major, new commitments from Canada, Colombia, Chile and the Cook Islands where they are expanding marine protections in their waters. These nations understand that healthy oceans are critical for productive fisheries and economic growth. The Administration’s proposed rollbacks are out of step with that reality.
The President ought to reject this recommendation and instead double down on America’s commitment to ocean conservation.
Our work is not done. I urge our entire community to continue to speak out in support of these critical areas and to act to protect our oceans and marine resources.
