Statement From Dr. M. Sanjayan, CEO of Conservation International, on Zinke Recommendations to White House

August 24, 2017

Today, U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke submitted a draft report to the White House and, according to news accounts, recommended the reduction of a “handful” of conservation areas. While we await more details on the content of those recommendations, we urge the Administration to listen to the millions of Americans who have raised their voices in support of these special places.

Conservation and careful management of our world’s precious natural resources are critical to long-term growth and prosperity. President Trump ought to reject any recommendation to reduce conservation areas held in trust for the American people. The United States has long led the world in conservation. Any recommendation to reduce protections is unworthy of that proud legacy.

As we await further details, I want to thank the millions of Americans — including tens of thousands from the Conservation International community — who continue to raise their voices for these important areas.
