ArcelorMittal is the largest steel making entity in the world, with global mining and manufacturing operations producing more than 100 million tons of steel annually. Conservation International-Liberia is currently working with ArcelorMittal and with local NGOs in Liberia to conduct baseline biological studies to support the company's Environmental and Social Impact Assessment and Environmental Management Plan for a mining project in the mountains of West Nimba. These assessments are aimed at helping ArcelorMittal Liberia understand the biology of the area, and making recommendations for additional surveys as well as mitigating and offsetting activities that the company could include in their future plans.
Conservation International is also engaging with ArcelorMittal Liberia in the Nimba Biodiversity Stakeholder Forum and is working to develop a strong collaboration that would deliver both economic development and conservation in this key landscape.
