Conservation International Statement on the Paris Agreement Entering into Force

Arlington, Va. USA – Today, the Paris Agreement on global climate change surpassed the number of ratifications needed to enter into force. Countries will now begin work toward the goals established in the Agreement to limit temperature rise to 1.5 to 2°C and increase resilience to climate change impacts. 72 countries, representing more than 56.75% of global emissions, have demonstrated their commitment to addressing climate change by joining the Agreement and finalizing their national plans to contribute to the goals of the Agreement. The upcoming climate negotiations in Marrakech, Morocco will focus on operationalizing the Agreement by working on the rules and incentives for how the Paris Agreement will be carried out.

Peter Seligmann, Chairman, CEO and founder of Conservation International:
“The speed at which countries acted to put the Paris Agreement into force in less than a year after it was agreed upon is an inspiration. Its swift enacting underscores the urgent need to fight climate change. It has been a long journey to this point, but for the sake of our children and future generations we need to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement by utilizing all means available to fight climate change, especially the potential nature provides as 30 percent of the solution.”

Maggie Comstock, director of climate policy, Conservation International:
“As we move toward implementation of the Paris Agreement, countries must harness nature’s capacity to store carbon and protect people from the impacts of a changing climate by incorporating ecosystems into national mitigation and adaptation policies and actions.”
