Guyana

The name Guyana is derived from an Indigenous word meaning “land of many waters.” Landscapes such as the North Rupununi Wetlands provide livelihoods, food and transportation for Indigenous communities. The country’s rivers and lakes also sustain endangered species such as the harpy eagle, black caiman, arapaima and jaguar. However, these ecosystems are threatened by destructive mining practices and erosion caused by deforestation.
