Conservation International at COP30

A decisive moment for people and nature

In November 2025, global leaders, scientists, Indigenous and Afro-descendant leaders, youth, business and civil society will gather in Belém, Brazil, for the United Nations climate conference, known as COP30.

This summit arrives at a defining moment. The world must accelerate climate action, prevent the Amazon from crossing an irreversible tipping point, and expand climate finance to protect nature and support communities. The urgency is real — but so is the possibility.

At Conservation International, we are working to help secure a livable future — by protecting nature and investing in the people who protect it.

Why does COP30 matter?

The U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP) is the annual summit where nations assess global climate progress and negotiate the path forward. COP30 arrives as the world approaches a critical crossroads. To keep average global temperature rise below 1.5° Celsius, humanity must accelerate climate action — which necessarily includes the protection of nature.

This COP represents a chance to move beyond pledges toward delivery, integrity and equity – grounding climate solutions in science, collaboration and the knowledge of those who have protected nature for generations.

Our priorities at COP30

Driving climate ambition through nature, people and partnerships

Conservation International’s focus is simple: protect nature, uphold rights and accelerate investments that secure a healthy, just and climate-safe future.

Preventing the Amazon ‘tipping point’ and advancing a sustainable bioeconomy

Stopping forest loss in the Amazon — a major driver of global warming — and unlocking community-centered economic opportunity.

→ End deforestation and protect 80 percent of the Amazon by 2030
→ Restore degraded areas, including at least 5 percent of existing forest
→ Advance locally defined bioeconomies — conservation-based economies — that value standing forest and support community prosperity

Mobilizing US $1.3 trillion for climate action and nature

Ensuring the global financial system meets the scale of the climate and nature crisis.

→ Advance the Baku-to-Belém Roadmap for climate and nature finance
→ Scale public-private finance partnerships and innovative investment tools
→ Reform subsidies and finance policies that harm ecosystems and communities

Uplifting Indigenous, Afro-descendant and local communities

Placing rights, land tenure and local leadership at the heart of climate action.

→ Expand direct finance and equitable benefit-sharing
→ Strengthen land rights and tenure security
→ Scale proven models like the Dedicated Grant Mechanism and Inclusive Conservation Initiative

Scaling high-integrity carbon markets and jurisdictional REDD+

Unlocking trusted, equitable climate finance for forests.

→ Accelerate jurisdictional REDD+ programs
→ Advance high-integrity carbon markets grounded in science and transparency
→ Ensure community participation and benefits in climate finance

Investing in adaptation and resilience

Helping communities prepare for climate impacts.

→ Scale nature-based adaptation in climate-vulnerable regions
→ Implement “green-gray” coastal resilience projects
→ Elevate local and traditional knowledge in adaptation plans

Advancing ocean-climate action and ‘blue carbon’ leadership

Protecting the coastal ecosystems that protect us.

→ Expand blue carbon science, policy and finance
→ Protect and restore mangroves, seagrass and wetlands
→ Strengthen global collaboration through the UAE Framework on Mangroves

We are #TOGETHERFORNATURE

Standing with Indigenous and Afro-descendant leaders protecting our planet

As the world gathers, so do the voices who protect nature. Launched on the road to COP30, #TogetherForNature unites knowledge holders, cultural leaders, partners and allies in a shared call: Climate solutions must be supported by those closest to the lands and waters we depend on.

By listening and learning together, we can build pathways rooted in traditional knowledge, lived experience and community leadership. When Indigenous and local leadership is respected and supported, nature thrives — and so do people.

Voices from the global #TogetherForNature community:

A Historic Moment for Community-Led Climate Action

Conservation International welcomes a major new global pledge to expand funding for Indigenous Peoples, Afro-descendant Peoples and local communities — surpassing the original US$1.7 billion commitment made at COP26.

This renewed support recognizes that many of the world’s healthiest forests and most effective climate solutions are stewarded by these communities. Directly investing in their leadership and land rights is one of the most impactful ways to protect nature and stabilize the climate.

Conservation International is proud to join this effort. Building on decades of partnership, we will help advance this pledge through rights-based, locally led approaches – including through WEAVE, our new initiative designed to align global commitments with community-driven action on the ground.
