Arlington, VA – A groundbreaking website which puts web-users on the front-line of the battle against climate change by allowing them to protect the planet’s tropical forests acre by acre has won this year’s Webby award for activism.

Conservation International’s Protect An Acre site – which was designed by BBDO Atmosphere as the online element of the Lost There, Felt Here campaign, featuring longstanding CI board member Harrison Ford – allows Internet users to take direct action to protect an acre of tropical forest by making a donation of $15 dollars.

The site features a personal message from Mr. Ford and allows users to see the impact their donation has through a simple mechanism, which gives them the ability to find their acre of protected forest.

Laura Bowling, CI’s Senior Vice President Strategic Marketing said: “Very few people realize that the burning and clearing of tropical forests puts more CO2 emissions into the atmosphere every year than all the world’s cars, trucks, planes, trains and ships combined. People are stunned to learn this and they immediately ask how can we stop this?

“We wanted to give people a simple way to take immediate action to tackle the threat of climate change. Protect an Acre gives you not only the chance to do something on climate, but it also helps you learn about the amazing abundance of life – plants, animals and people – who call these tropical forests home. We are hugely grateful to BBDO Atmosphere for their work on this, and incredibly excited about this award – which we hope will get even more people to sign up to protect acres of forest in the fight to halt climate change.”

With nearly 10,000 entries from all 50 US states and over 60 countries worldwide, the 13th Annual Webby Awards is the biggest yet and continues to be the leading international award honoring excellence on the Internet.

"We are honored to be part of the Webby winning team with Conservation International,” stated Andreas Combuechen, Chairman, CEO and Chief Creative Officer, BBDO Atmosphere. "It is great to have our work honored for such a worthy cause – it’s a real win-win."

CI along with other Webby award winners will be honored at the 13th Annual Webby Gala on June 8 at Cipriani Wall Street, hosted by Seth Meyers, Head Writer of "Saturday Night Live" and host of Weekend Update.

*CI regularly reassesses our assumptions and conclusions to ensure they are consistent with the most current and reliable data sources available so that we are delivering accurate and up-to-date information.  Accordingly, in December 2009, we updated our estimates related to global greenhouse gas emissions to reflect the best and most current science. We now estimate that 16% of greenhouse gas emissions result from deforestation and logging.
