Wool, Land and Legacy

Conservation International is proud to present a short film set high in the windswept grasslands of South Africa's Eastern Cape, where shepherds have herded for generations.

Directed by award-winning filmmaker and ecologist Whitney Hassett, the film was shot entirely on location, moving through open highland pasture and into homesteads where wool production has long been tied to the rhythms of the land. It gathers voices of the people who live and work here: Indigenous leaders, local herders, and the families whose relationship with these grasslands is generational.

As global fashion looks for more responsible paths forward, this corner of the Eastern Cape offers a working answer: wool production carried out in partnership with nature and anchored in rural livelihoods. Together, thread by thread, this community is weaving a future where people and nature thrive, together.
