Deborah Spalding is the global head of nature finance at Conservation International, where she oversees a 40-person team that mobilizes investment for nature.
This investment encompasses carbon finance, impact investment advisory services, sustainable financing for protected areas and other innovative financial structures.
Previously, she served as Chief Investment Officer of Commonfund OCIO, a US$ 16 billion investment advisor to foundations and endowments. Prior roles include Chief Investment Officer of the State of Connecticut, Head of International Investments for Schroders Investment Management N.A. and Managing Director of International Investments at Scudder Kemper Investments. Spalding also co-founded Working Lands Investment Partners, LLC, an independent investment management firm that invests in market for wetlands mitigation credits, water quality and quantity instruments and habitat banking.
Deborah received a B.A. from Tufts University and holds graduate degrees from Harvard University, University of California at Berkeley and Yale University. She is past board chair of the National Wildlife Federation and serves on the board of the U.S. Endowment for Forestry and Communities. She is also an advisory board member for the Yale Center for Business and the Environment and a Lecturer in forest finance at Yale.
