DUBAI (Dec. 1, 2023) – The Vice President of Conservation International-Brazil, Mauricio Bianco, issued the following statement in response to a proposal made today at COP28 by Brazil to set up a global fund to finance forest conservation. The fund, for which Brazil is hoping to raise $250 billion, would support forest conservation in 80 countries.
“There is no path to climate stability without reversing nature loss. Today’s announcement is a leap in the right direction – an unambiguous assertion of Amazonian leadership at precisely the right time.
“As the clock ticks down, we are nearing tipping points in the Amazon. Our actions must match the urgency of this moment. We need a mass mobilization of funding in nature, to prevent deforestation, maintain standing forests, and accelerate restoration efforts – all necessary measures to sustain the Amazon’s bounties for many generations to come. Social and economic equity to more than 50 million people that live in the Amazon is integral to the success of any conservation initiative, and it will be mission-critical for the fund to fully include the Indigenous peoples and local communities that directly depend on the forest.
“Everything we do, at COP28 and beyond, must be focused on rapidly distributing funding to the areas that need it most, for the benefit of all people.”

DUBAI (1º de dezembro de 2023) - O Vice-Presidente da Conservação Internacional no Brasil, Mauricio Bianco, emitiu a seguinte declaração em resposta a uma proposta feita hoje pelo Brasil para criar um fundo global para financiar a conservação florestal. O fundo, que espera arrecadar US$ 250 bilhões, apoiaria a conservação florestal em 80 países.
"Não há caminho para a estabilidade climática sem reverter a perda da natureza. O anúncio de hoje é um salto na direção certa - uma afirmação inequívoca da liderança amazônica no momento certo.
"À medida que o relógio avança, estamos nos aproximando ao ponto crítico da Amazônia. Nossas ações devem corresponder à urgência deste momento. Precisamos de uma mobilização em massa de recursos em favor da natureza, para evitar o desmatamento, manter as florestas em pé e acelerar os esforços de restauração - todas as medidas necessárias para sustentar a riqueza da Amazônia para muitas gerações futuras. A equidade social e econômica para mais de 50 milhões de pessoas que vivem na Amazônia é fundamental para o sucesso de qualquer iniciativa de conservação, e será crucial para o fundo incluir totalmente os povos indígenas e as comunidades locais que dependem diretamente da floresta.
"Tudo o que fazemos, na COP28 e além, deve estar focado na distribuição rápida de recursos para as áreas que mais precisam, para o benefício de todas as pessoas."
