Before joining Conservation International, Stephanie spent more than 20 years leading a range of strategic initiatives spanning oceans, human health, and climate change at The Nature Conservancy. Stephanie is also a visiting scientist at the Institute of the Environment and Sustainability at the University of California at Los Angeles, and at the Duke University Marine Lab. Throughout her career, Stephanie’s research has focused on reducing threats to ocean ecosystems, with special attention to how environment and humanity are intertwined.
In a wide-ranging conservation career, Stephanie has co-founded an organization that works to address sewage pollution; worked with local communities to help establish marine protected areas; ; and designed and led a global learning network for conservation practitioners, among other achievements. A widely cited spokesperson, Stephanie has appeared on numerous media outlets and as a guest on “The Martha Stewart Show.” She also appeared as an expert contributor on the Disney movie “Oceans” and in the BBC series “The Power of Nature.”
Stephanie was named one of Women’s Health Magazine’s “Clean and Green Pioneers” and Babble.com’s “Moms Who are Changing the World.” She was also selected as a member of the inaugural class of NatureNet Science Fellows, a path-breaking program sponsored by The Nature Conservancy and leading universities that brings new approaches to solving global challenges around sustainable provision of food, energy and water.
