STATEMENT: CI-Brazil leader commends Lula’s $1 billion TFFF announcement at UNGA
September 23, 2025
NEW YORK (Sept. 23, 2025) – Conservation International today issued the following statement in support of Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s announcement at the 80th U.N. General Assembly regarding a game-changing $1 billion investment in the Tropical Forests Forever Facility.
Mauricio Bianco, Vice President, who leads Conservation International-Brazil, said:
"Less than 50 days before the start of COP30, the Tropical Forest Forever Facility (TFFF) brings concreteness to the advances needed to tackle the major environmental challenges facing humanity. Forest conservation is indispensable to mitigate the impacts of climate change and biodiversity loss, as well as to ensure crucial ecosystem services that underpin the economic and social resilience of tropical forest countries.
“Yet, until today, forest conservation has always been hindered by insufficient financial resources. The TFFF, with its innovative approach, can change this scenario by mobilizing resources from governments as well as private sector investments that generate financial returns. And with an important distinction: the guarantee that part of these resources will reach initiatives that directly benefit Indigenous Peoples and local communities."
