Washington, DC (April 20, 2023) –  Conservation International CEO Dr. M. Sanjayan released the following statement in recognition of President Biden’s announcement from the 2023 Major Economies Forum on Energy and Climate that the U.S. will provide $1 billion to the Green Climate Fund.

Sanjayan said:

“In 2014, the Obama Administration promised $3 billion to the Green Climate Fund, and for nearly a decade, that promise has gone unfulfilled. Today's $1 billion funding announcement re-affirms that the United States intends to lead on climate and pay its fair share — this will go a long way toward restoring the credibility of U.S. commitments abroad.

“The GCF is a testament to the power of multilateralism: Across 216 projects, it is preventing 2.5 billion tons of carbon emissions and reducing the vulnerability of 912 million people. A well-resourced GCF, bolstered by the leadership of incoming Executive Director Mafalda Duarte, will help the most climate-vulnerable countries reduce emissions and adapt to rising sea levels, unpredictable weather and dwindling resources. U.S. contributions to the Fund are not only an investment in climate security, but also resource security, economic security, and national security.

“We commend President Biden for his vision and resolve. As the climate crisis accelerates, and vulnerable communities teeter on the brink, continued leadership from the United States will be indispensable.”
