Managing Director, Conservation Stewards Program
Zachary Wells is Managing Director of Conservation International’s Conservation Stewards Program, a partnership with communities who agree to protect their natural resources, as well as the benefits they provide, in exchange for a steady stream of compensation from investors.

Zachary joined Conservation International in 2013. His work focuses on the creation of fair and transparent deals — known as conservation agreements — that help communities thrive by choosing conservation and the sustainable use of the environment. Before leading the Conservation Stewards Program, Zachary worked in Conservation International’s Center for Environmental Leadership in Business (CELB).

Prior to joining Conservation International, Zachary spent four years with a partner organization in Papua New Guinea, the Tree Kangaroo Conservation Program-PNG, managing a landscape-scale conservation program and NGO. He currently serves on the organization’s Board of Directors. His career in conservation really began in Africa in 2003 with a service in the United States Peace Corps’ in Zambia, where he worked with communities and the Zambian Wildlife Authority to improve wildlife management in the buffer zone of North Kafue National Park.

Zachary has a master’s degree in International Environmental Policy from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey.
