Forest fire emergency initiative launched in response to devastating fires across Peru

Forest fires in Peru have affected thousands of hectares of forest, crops and human lives. Organizations, committed to conservation, are activating a campaign to channel emergency funds and are asking for public collaboration through the Peru por Naturaleza (Peru for Nature) platform.

In recent weeks, the country has witnessed an alarming environmental crisis: out-of-control forest fires are devastating the Amazon and other regions. So far, 14 regions have been severely affected, with more than 80 fires that have destroyed thousands of hectares of forest and cultivation areas. The situation is critical, with 16 people dead, and a growing number of affected people every day, and a devastating loss of biodiversity.

In response to this emergency, Profonanpe, Peru's environmental fund, has earmarked an emergency funding line of up to $100,000 to support organizations working tirelessly to fight these fires. These funds will be channeled directly to the most affected areas, where the local response has been overcome by the magnitude of the disaster.

About the initiative

The support will be channelled through the Peru por Naturaleza platform, which aims to mobilise citizens, companies and organisations in a joint effort to raise funds to help tackle forest fires and mitigate their impact on communities and ecosystems. The proposal is supported by Conservamos por Naturaleza, an initiative of the Peruvian Society of Environmental Law (SPDA), Conservation International Peru and WWF Peru.

Each contribution will go towards funding frontline actions, restoring affected ecosystems and providing support to families who have suffered the consequences of this crisis. In addition, the funds will enable the purchase of essential materials such as food and equipment for rescuers on the front line fighting the fires, ensuring they have the equipment they need to continue their work.
