As an Accredited Entity of the Green Climate Fund, Conservation International (CI) is eligible to apply for GCF funds to implement projects that sustainably address both climate change mitigation and adaptation.

The Green Climate Fund (GCF) was established in 2010 as a financial mechanism of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) with the goal of shifting development paradigms by transforming economies via low-emission and climate-resilient development pathways. The GCF aims for an equal balance between mitigation and adaptation investments over time, with a focus on allocating resources for particularly vulnerable countries, including least developed countries, small island developing states and African states.

All developing country Parties to the UNFCCC are eligible to receive resources from the GCF to respond to climate change. The GCF gives recipient countries access to funding through accredited international, national, sub-national and regional implementing entities and intermediaries (including NGOs, government ministries, national development banks, and other domestic or regional organizations that meet the GCF's standards).

With this accreditation, Conservation International works directly with national governments around the world to identify and design effective climate change projects. We also oversee project management and implementation, ensuring that projects meet high technical and financial standards, are gender-responsive, and comply fully with the GCF’s environmental and social safeguards.

          WHAT WE FUND

The CI-GCF Agency focuses on projects in four strategic results areas to best leverage the synergies between Conservation International and the GCF in support of countries' efforts to address climate change.

Conservation International is accredited to implement projects through grant funding at an international level for micro (less than US$ 10 million), small (US$ 10 million-50 million), and medium (US$ 50 million-250 million) sized projects. Projects must have an environmental and social risk level of category B – medium risk level or lower.

CI will focus primarily on the following GCF results areas:
