Michael B. Mascia, Ph.D.

His research focuses on environmental governance, particularly the emergence, evolution and impact of conservation regimes. Dr. Mascia has published widely in leading scientific journals and has advised governments, conservation organizations and donors on four continents. He is senior editor of the recently published book Conservation Social Science: Understanding People, Conserving Biodiversity (Wiley, 2023), an authoritative introduction to the field of conservation social science.
Dr. Mascia previously served as head of Conservation International's Betty and Gordon Moore Center for Science; President of the Board of the Society for Conservation Biology (SCB), the first social scientist to hold the post; founding co-Editor in Chief of Conservation Letters; and as founding President of the SCB Social Science Working Group. He holds a Ph.D. in environmental politics and policy from Duke University.
