Caura River Expedition Day 4

Grab

Jose Garcia collects invertebrates using
the grab.

This fancy invertebrate equipment is really a mini-construction instrument.

"You have to watch out,
though..."

The grab allows scientists to reach into the bottom of the channels and pull up known quantities of gravel, sand and silt. This sample can then be dumped into a bag or tray and sorted through at leisure.

You have to watch out, though. Some tiny sand dwelling catfish have sharp spines that hurt as much as a bee sting, and flat water beetles have a nasty habit of biting as you collect them.
