D-net

Invertebrates team member, José Garcia, is shown here searching for water bugs in inimitable style.

"There are two ways to use a D-net to scoop up vegetation," he comments,

"One way is that you can push the net in front of you scraping the ground [as if you were using a vacuum cleaner or a snow shovel.]"

This is effective until the water becomes too deep to walk forward. José then tries out the other way: he flings the net over his head, allowing it to fall and hit the bottom. He then drags it back toward him, open side down. The leaves and mud he scrapes up will be strained and then searched for small aquatic invertebrates.
