Caura River Expedition Day 10

Colaroja

This Bryconops colaroja, or Sardina rabo de candela, was a surprise to AquaRAP team leaders Barry Chernoff and Antonio Machado who had recently (1999) published a paper describing it as endemic to the Río Cuyuní in the Guyanas.

Aside from its beauty – colaroja is also interested for its association with Podostemonacea water plants. It clearly represents a new record for this basin and increases understanding of the relationship of this river and those which drain directly into the Guyanas.
