Caura River Expedition Day 10

December 6, 2000

Angel Rojas

Nationality: Venezuela
Specialty: Cast-netting

Angel grew up in the Caribbean state of Anzoatigué in Puerto de la Cruz. "My grandfather taught me to fish. My father was a fisherman, too, but he did not want me to learn. He wanted me to study instead."

Angel continued through his junior year of high school, then dropped out to fish professionally and raise a family. After 15 years of commercial fishing - mainly for shrimp in the coastal bay, Angel has been working for the last 8 years as a caretaker in the National Aquarium.

"My kids have grown up around fishes. My youngest son loves to fish, too, but I hope he doesn't become a commercial fisherman. I'd like him to go to school." Angel's 19-year-old daughter is studying to be a civil engineer.
