How do we create this movement? We believe that in order to drive additional commitments to sustainability, players in the industry must make a commitment, learn from those commitments and ultimately inspire others to act.

In order to get there, we’ll evaluate the wide spectrum of existing commitments, facilitate reporting against those commitments, and develop a collaborative network to inspire new and even more ambitious actions.

Using our findings from our Initiative Mapping Study – a collaborative review of the current status of coffee sustainability done in partnership with the Global Coffee Platform (GCP) and the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA) - we are evaluating inventory interventions, enabling us to learn more about the current state of coffee. By collecting this information, we will be able to see how to address current challenges and measure impact over time.

Then, we ask Challenge participants to state their commitments on Commitments Hub. By stating commitments in this space, the coffee industry will be able to see the collective investments and actions being taken to make coffee a sustainable agricultural product.

As we share commitments from across the sector, we will have greater transparency and knowledge sharing across all parties involved. Companies, NGOs, governments, roasters and growers will be able to report and track progress, and share their experiences to inspire new commitments from others. As this cyclical process continues, together, we will advance on the journey towards sustainability.

      Join the Challenge

We welcome all business, organizations and governments working in the coffee sector to join the Sustainable Coffee Challenge. The Challenge is dedicated to transparency and to finding system-wide solutions, and we recognize there are many different paths to sustainability depending on where one sits in the value chain. Current challenge participants include producers, retailers, traders, roasters, importers, industry associations, governments, donor agencies and other NGOs.

The Challenge catalogs, tracks and shares experience to amplify results and inspire others to action. Joining the Challenge will enable you to showcase your efforts by adding commitments to the Hub and help guide other members’ plans and investments. In addition, there are no fees associated with joining the Challenge.

We invite actors from across the sector to join us at the table. It's easy to get involved as a partner:

      • Align with the Challenge's vision of making coffee the first sustainable agricultural product by sharing a statement of support and lending your name and logo to be used on our partner page.
      • Join the movement of increased transparency of sustainability efforts across the sector by stating your commitment to sustainable coffee on the Hub and report on your progress.
      • Engage with other Challenge partners by joining a Challenge working group or Collective Action Network to advance sustainability across the sector. (Encouraged)
      • Share, educate and inspire others through effective communications and by using the hashtag #sustaincoffee. (Encouraged)

      Coffee Catalogue

The coffee sector has invested heavily in sustainability for decades, recognizing that we must ensure our ability to meet rising demand for coffee while also increasing the prosperity and well-being of producers and conserving nature. In late 2015 the Global Coffee Platform, the Specialty Coffee Association of America and the Sustainable Coffee Challenge jointly recognized the need to inventory existing efforts to make coffee a sustainable agricultural product, understand who is doing what sort of work, where the investments are going and how we can better understand and share our impacts and experiences. The Coffee Sustainability Catalogue, which uses the input from over 80 respondents from across the industry, sheds light on sustainability efforts currently underway, and how actors in the sector can collaborate to make coffee the world’s first fully sustainable agricultural product.
