Healthy economies depend on healthy ecosystems. Today, however, most are not in balance. The
economic gains of the last century came at a steep price to the natural world. Forests, oceans, and other
ecosystems vital to sustaining life are in critical condition. Pollution, wasteful use of natural resources, and
climate change continue to threaten natural habitats and the human livelihoods that depend on them.
