Companies in today’s increasingly competitive global marketplace are focusing their efforts on outstanding environmental performance as a business imperative.

The Center for Environmental Leadership in Business (CELB) works with our corporate partners to improve their business practices, creating and implementing strategies that combine bold commitments to sustainability with practical solutions that deliver benefits to the bottom line and the environment.

Our role

CELB leads CI’s efforts to promote sustainable business practices by working with companies — particularly those that have extensive global footprints in industries like mining, energy and agriculture — to ensure that the production of vital goods and services is sustainable and does not undercut nature’s ability to support humanity.

CELB works with leaders across the agricultural value chain to meet growing demands for food, fuel and water in ways that preserve the forests, fresh water, oceans and other natural resources on which all people depend. We help companies in agribusiness, retail, and food and consumer products develop and apply practical tools that integrate conservation principles into business decisions. CELB assists companies in creating incentives for widespread adoption of good farming and conservation practices and landscape planning to protect and restore healthy ecosystems.

CELB works in partnership with major mining, oil and gas companies and industry associations to promote sustainable business practices — so that the world continues to have access to the resources we need to grow our global economy without destroying the environment. We advise extractives companies to avoid impacts on nature wherever possible, and to offset the impacts on natural habitats and biodiversity when they do occur, in order to contribute to conservation and help improve livelihoods for local communities.

CELB cultivates partnerships with leading corporations and influential thought leaders dedicated to taking a leadership role on outstanding environmental performance and the preservation of natural capital. For companies looking to reduce their carbon footprint, supporting forest carbon activities can powerfully complement internal actions that reduce emissions. In addition to addressing one of the leading causes of global climate change, protecting and restoring forests provides a suite of social and environmental benefits, including supporting the well-being of local communities by ensuring the continued delivery of important ecosystem services that intact forests provide.

CELB convenes and facilitates collective action among companies, governments and other stakeholders to replicate and scale up our impacts. For example, the Business & Sustainability Council (BSC) — established in 2003 — serves as a catalyst for innovation, convening corporate leaders to achieve excellence in sustainability, healthy ecosystems, healthy economies and human well-being. The BSC is uniquely positioned to harness private sector ingenuity with CI thought leadership and science, practical experience from the field and best practices from corporate partners. Representing global revenues greater than US$ 2.3 trillion and 3 million employees, the BSC brings industry leaders together to discuss, share and develop concrete solutions to key sustainability issues in which the private sector can play a defining role.
