Located just 80 kilometers (50 miles) from the bustling city of Jakarta, the Gedepahala region is home to some of Java’s last remaining forests, where fewer and fewer endangered Javan gibbons and other primates are spotted swinging through the trees.

The forests are also important because they help filter and provide a reliable flow of water to over 30 million people on the island of Java. When the forests are cut down, the water stops flowing.

Increased demand for forest resources has caused massive deforestation and degradation, endangering wildlife and threatening vulnerable local communities who depend on the forests’ resources for survival.

Our role

CI supports forest protection and restoration in Indonesia's Gedepahala region, home to some of the last remaining forests (around 135,000 hectares or around 334,000 acres) on the island of Java. Safeguarding and restoring these critical forests in turn protects endangered species and their habitats — and also provides a steady flow of fresh water and income for local communities.

Located on the edge of West Java’s Gunung Gede Pangrango National Park, the Javan Gibbon center rehabilitates gibbons rescued from the illegal pet trade, with the ultimate goal to release bonded male and female pairs back into the wild — like Jowo and Bombom, the stars of one of nature’s cutest love stories.

EditText:The goal of reforestation efforts is to create a “green wall” of trees protecting two national parks (Gunung Gede Pangrango National Park and Gunung Halimun Salak National Park) from encroachment while also restoring degraded land and creating local livelihoods opportunities. CI works with local community groups in the buffer zone to grow, plant and maintain seedlings using a mix of native trees and fruit trees that provide income. Replanting trees brings benefits to both wildlife and people. EditText:Gedepahala is an ideal location for conservation education thanks to its close proximity to Indonesia’s urban epicenter. The Bodogol Conservation Education Center in Gunung Gede-Pangrango National Park welcomes visitors with information about the importance of protecting the park’s watershed forests for wildlife — and people. The Mobile Conservation Unit visits schools in the communities surrounding the national park with messages targeting children as future conservation leaders.
