The mountain area of southwest China is critical for the freshwater supply of more than 20 million people, providing an essential resource for sustaining human well-being and economic growth.

Rural sewage pollution is a significant contributor to the nonpoint source pollution in this area. Nonpoint source pollution is mainly caused by rainfall or snowmelt moving over and through the ground; as the runoff moves, it picks up and carries away natural and human-made pollutants, depositing them into lakes, rivers, wetlands, coastal waters and ground waters.

Previously, few affordable and effective solutions existed to prevent the threat of rural sewage pollution and resulting public health problems, especially in mountain areas. With funding from HSBC, this project will pilot and promote an innovative strategy to control the nonpoint source pollution in mountain areas of southwest China.
