Conservation International fosters green development through economic alternatives to deforestation.

Through the Sustainable Landscapes Partnership (SLP) approach, Conservation International (CI) is working on green development projects in North Sumatra, Indonesia, and San Martin, Peru. Tracking the projects as they progress toward conservation goals is a critical step to ensure accountability — and effective management of scarce conservation funds. To accurately provide a measurable, holistic and costeffective standard for monitoring and evaluation, CI’s Carbon Fund developed the Landscape Accounting Framework (LAF).

Unlike existing monitoring and evaluation frameworks, which limit their scope to mainly monitoring biodiversity and nature conservation — as opposed to monitoring progress toward broader landscape sustainability objectives — the LAF monitors landscape sustainability with quantifiable indicators (range of natural capital, rate of production, level of human wellbeing) that help decisionmakers and program managers prioritize their investments in sustainable landscapes. Currently implemented in both Peru and lndonesia, the LAF monitors the progress of these programs across a collective 8 million hectares (80,000 square kilometers) of land.

Subnational governments, landscape managers, producers and their partners must evaluate progress toward sustainable landscape goals to improve upon their process. The LAF provides easy access to information, and it monitors and evaluates the status and trends through a series of graphs, charts, statistics and maps that are easy to understand and use.

The LAF ensures complete transparency by sharing results through three unique tools:

    • A scorecard that captures overlying trends observed at the landscape level (View and download the latest scorecards below in the Publications section.)
    • An interactive dashboard that examines the data and breaks the landscape down into individual administrative units (provinces, states, etc.)
    • An interactive GIS repository that allows viewing of the data used in the analysis

    EditItem Text:

The LAF is highly adaptable and allows users to identify and monitor relevant goals and indicators for sustainability in the context of their landscape, organized under key themes including natural capital, production systems, governance and human well-being. The LAF leverages the use of regularly updated, accredited and freely available datasets, such as government censuses or other accredited sources , thereby maintaining reliability as well as lowering the cost and time invested in the analysis.
