New York – Conservation International (CI), Christie’s and Runway to Green are pleased to announce that the second annual Green Auction: “Bid to Save the Earth” raised a total of $2.4 million between March 17 and April 7, 2011. These funds benefit four leading environmental organizations: CI, Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), Oceana, and Central Park Conservancy, and will be used to support important environmental initiatives.
Bid to Save the Earth funds were raised through the combination of a live, star-studded Green Auction held at Christie’s Rockefeller Center on March 29, 2011, an online auction powered by charitybuzz, a text to give campaign, and generous sponsorship.
The live auction, which took place on March 29th in New York City, was co-hosted by David and Susan Rockefeller, Graydon and Anna Carter and François-Henri Pinault and Salma Hayek, was officiated by Lydia Fenet, Christie’s Director of Strategic Partnerships, along with emcee Saturday Night Live’s Seth Meyers. After the auction, guests were surprised by a special musical performance by cutting edge musical artist Nicki Minaj.
The online auction, powered by charitybuzz, ran from March 17 through April 7 and raised more than $752,000 in funds. The top online auction items include: a three night cruise on the Lady Sheridan luxury private yacht in Cannes for $100,000; Blue Ocean Indian Blue by Bunta Inoue for $31,000; a one hour tennis lesson with John McEnroe in New York City for $26,000; a ten night safari for four in Tanzania and Mozambique for $26,000; and a Girard-Perregaux Watch Specially Made for the Green Auction for $17,000.
Harrison Ford and Her Majesty Queen Noor were among several longtime CI supporters who donated once-in-a-lifetime experiences that helped drive enthusiastic bidding. Ford, an experienced pilot and Vice Chairman of CI’s Board of Directors, offered a top bidder a future opportunity to meet him in Los Angeles, as well as enjoy a keepsake photo opportunity, before flying to lunch in one of his personal aircrafts. Ford’s lot also included round-trip business class airfare on Delta, a relaxing four-night stay in a luxurious suite at The Ritz-Carlton, Los Angeles and a commemorative Hamilton Watch from the Khaki Team Earth collection, which was designed in collaboration with Ford, and produced to support the work of Conservation International around the world. His lot fetched $35,000 in live bidding.
Queen Noor, an Emeritus member of CI's Board as well as author and international public servant devoted to world peace and justice, offered a winning bidder and guests the unparalleled chance to enjoy dinner with her in her Washington DC area home to discuss global politics. Celebrated, James Beard Award-winning chef Art Smith, known for his best-selling books, his restaurants which include Washington DC’s Art & Soul, and his ten years of service as Oprah Winfrey’s personal chef, partnered with Her Majesty to donate his services in preparing an unforgettable meal with sustainably-grown local ingredients. This online lot sold for more than $15,000.

The 2011 Green Auction marked the inaugural partnership with Runway to Green (RTG). The collaboration brought together top art collectors, philanthropists, financiers, and environmentalists with the fashion community, utilizing their combined influence to raise funds and awareness for the preservation and sustainability of our precious natural resources. Pieces from the Runway to Green Collection are available for purchase Net-A-Porter, and will be available in stores now through the fall.
Event and auction sponsors, who generously donated a total of $250,0000 in cash and in-kind sponsorships, included Tiffany & Co., Delta Air Lines, La Mer, Net-A-Porter, U.S. Trust, Bank of America Private Wealth Management, The Ionic Bulb, Rouge Tomate, Stella Artois, Patron, Betts & Scholl, Angelica Flowers and Events and MVS Photo Booth.
