The Distribution of Pandas

Geographic Distribution

Giant pandas are found in just one country: China. Once, they lived in lowland forest areas but farming, forest clearing, and other development now restrict giant pandas to mountain ranges in the central provinces of Sichuan, Shaanxi, and Gansu.

This map illustrates current panda distribution in beige and red across eight disconnected areas. These areas support four big populations of pandas and at least 16 small and isolated groups. In green is all of the potential panda habitat and existing corridors are marked 1-12.

Combined, these corridors cover about 136 miles (or 218 kilometers) of land in between key habitats. Individually, they measure:

1. Pingheliang (17km)
2. Tianhuashan (7km)
3. Tuanyuhe (20km)
4. Jianshan (18km)
5. Heihe Township (7km)
6. Baxi Village (17km)
7. Population A&B (12km)
8. Jintangkongyu (7km)
9. Wangba (23km)
10. Xinmin (6km)
11. Matoushan (33km)
12. Leibo (19km)
