With offices in 31 countries and partners in 40 additional countries, CI helps to coordinate climate change action at local, national and international levels. CI advises government officials, civil society partners, indigenous groups and community leaders, aiding the development of effective national and regional plans, policies and institutions through innovative field actions.
CI is committed to developing sound science; practical field models and tools; effective global and national policy; progressive markets and economic incentives; and local capacities in order to deliver an immediate and sustainable response to climate change. Our team includes biologists, foresters, social scientists, remote-sensing specialists, economists and policy experts.
Our goals are stabilization of greenhouse gas emissions at 350-450 parts per million and to maintain and enhance the adaptive capacity of all ecosystems in the face of climate change. With the right combination of strategic partnerships and local community engagement, a healthy natural world can serve as our most important asset in resolving the greatest challenge of our time.
Four integrated strategies for combating climate change
CI's science and knowledge team is forging new ground in predicting the impacts of climate change on natural systems, testing methodologies for measuring and monitoring forest carbon, and piloting adaptation strategies at critical sites.
The implementation of climate mitigation and adaptation initiatives in the field raises awareness about climate change impacts among local people and helps empower them to take action. In simple terms, the success of these projects proves that our methods are working.
As a trusted advisor to governments at every level, CI is working with local partners to develop national climate and low-carbon development plans that address mitigation and adaptation needs. Adoption of ambitious state- and national-level policies will help nations progress toward an international climate change agreement.
CI works to develop the market mechanisms and financial incentives needed to mobilize private and public sector investment for protecting and restoring healthy ecosystems and the valuable services they provide.
