Policy position documents

A key component of CI's work is liaising with governments and participating in global dialogues to advance effective solutions to climate change. Thus in order to inform decision makers and partners, CI has prepared factsheets on some of the most pressing policy issues under discussion by the global political community on climate change – from forest protection to the inclusion of indigenous people, from the role of ecosystems in communities adapt to climate change to finance. Below are our latest materials.

Climate Change Policy Position (PDF - 464 KB)

Excerpt: "Climate change poses a profound threat to the natural ecosystems, biodiversity and ecological processes which sustain humanity and all life on earth."
Climate Change Adaptation Policy Position (PDF - 662 KB)

Excerpt: "Immediate and substantial adaptation efforts are needed for human societies and the natural ecosystems that sustain them to adapt in a rapidly changing environment. Rising temperatures due to climate change will continue for decades even if greenhouse gas emissions are stabilized today."

Emission Reduction Targets Policy Position (PDF - 398 KB)

Excerpt: "Climate change is a global crisis requiring all nations to unite in common resolve to take aggressive, transformative actions. To avoid dangerous climatic disruption, the world's leaders must commit to a global agreement in Copenhagen commensurate to the enormity of the climate challenge."

Climate Change + the Oceans Policy Position (PDF - 5.3 MB)

Excerpt: "Immediate and substantial reductions in greenhouse gas emissions are needed to reduce the impacts of climate change on the oceans. These impacts – including warming ocean temperatures, sea level rise, ocean acidification, and changing ocean currents – will lead to major shifts in the diversity, abundance and distribution of life in the ocean."

Joint positions

In addition, the following factsheets were developed in collaboration with partner organizations (the Amazon Research Institute (IPAM), Environmental Defense Fund, the Nature Conservancy, and Woods Hole Research Center):
