Inhabit montane tropical rainforest, tropical monsoon and dry forest.

  • Tail length: male – 680 mm (600-735 mm); female – 597 mm
  • Weight: male – 10.9 kg; female – 8.2 kg

Distinguishing features
Common names are given because the hair between the knee and the ankle is reddish or gray in color (depending on the subspecies), top of their head, the back and the under-parts are gray, the hands, feet, brow, shoulder and the area between the knee and the hip are black, white cheeks, white throat that is bordered with a thin area of red brown, rest of the face is a brownish orange, tail, genital region, scrotum, a triangular patch at the tail base, and the forearm are white, males have a red penis.

Diet
Primarily leaves, but can also include fruit, buds, seeds and flowers.

Behavior
Aboreal, use high tree canopy, groups from 4 to 25 and up to 40 individuals, vocalizations include a low-pitch growl given as a threat and a short squeal signaling distress.

Threats
Major threats include habitat loss, and capture for pet trade and food consumption.
