Habitat
Inhabit lowland tropical rainforest and montane tropical rainforest from lowland swamp to upland forest.

Physical Characteristics
  • Head and Body length: male – 970 mm; female – 780 mm
  • Weight: male – 77.5 kg (80.0-9.1 kg); female – 37.0 kg (33.0-45.0 kg)

Distinguishing features
Orange to brown coats, long coarse hair, males have a large throat pouch, adult males also have large cheek pads.

Diet
Primarily eat fruit, but supplement diet with young leaves, shoots, bark, soil, insects, eggs, baby birds, squirrels and other animal prey.

Behavior
Primarily arboreal, use all four limbs to climb trees and quadrupedal locomotion on the ground, males are typically solitary and females travel with offspring, diurnal, low reproductive rate.

Threats
Poaching, severe habitat loss due to logging and agriculture, and illegal exportation to zoos.
