Physical Characteristics

  • Head and Body length: male – 550 mm (540-560 mm); female – 555 mm (540-570 mm)
  • Tail length: 115 mm (150-160 mm)
  • Weight: male – 3450 g; female – 2880 g

Distinguishing features
Little hair on the face and the top of the head, with the most striking feature being their pink to scarlet colored face, unique among New World monkeys because they have a short tail, coats are shaggy and long and can vary from white to chestnut red

Habitat
Inhabit lowland tropical rainforest, white water-flooded forest and black-water swamp forest

Diet
Primarily eat seeds, but supplement diet with fruit, flowers, animal prey, buds and insects

Behavior
Diurnal, found in all levels of the forest, rarely come to the ground, move rapidly on all fours but cannot leap, usually travel in groups of 15 to 30 but troops can contain as many as 100 individuals

Threats
Species threatened due to habitat disturbance from the growing timber industry, excessive hunting, and collection for the pet trade
