Northrop Grumman Corporation (NGC) is working with CI to develop and review its sustainability strategy and policies. NGC has also provided CI and its Tropical Ecology Assessment and Monitoring Network (TEAM) with remote sensing data as part of an effort to monitor long term biodiversity trends. NGC is also a member of CI's Business & Sustainability Council, a community of companies committed to leveraging their business experience and resources to protect nature for the benefit of humanity.
Through its Center for Environmental Leadership in Business, CI is partnering with NGC to assist the company in adopting policies and strategies to reduce its environmental impact and construct a portfolio of activities to enable the company to demonstrate positive impacts from their business operations. Specific activities include a review of best practices, recommending protocols for measurement of impact areas (energy, water, waste, ecosystems) and advising in development of best practices and policies, specifically related to water and waste. The work is part of NGC's greeNG program and the company has linked their environmental goals to executive compensation.
In 2009, CI’s Science and Knowledge division worked with NGC to collect remote sensing data in La Selva, Costa Rica. This initiative represents part of an on-going effort by CI and its partners within the TEAM network to monitor long term trends in biodiversity and effectively guide conservation actions.
NGC made these data and derived data products including digital elevation models available to CI and gave CI permission to make these data freely available for scientific and educational purposes through the TEAM portal. CI scientists are now collaborating with scientists at Northrop Grumman, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab, the Organization for Tropical Studies and Sonoma State University on the analyses of these data to assess forest tree biomass and structure at multiple scales for monitoring ecosystem baselines and trends in the context of climate change.
