Antamina

CI-Peru has been working with the Antamina mining company and its subsidiary Asociación Ancash since 2004 to protect Andean ecosystems in the Conchucos corridor between Huascaran National Park and the Cordillera Huayhuash Reserved Zone. In 2010, with technical and financial support from CI-Peru, CI’s Conservation Stewards Program, and AA, the Peruvian NGO Asociación Ecosistemas Andinos (ECOAN) signed conservation agreements with the Pacllón and Llámac communities to protect the Polylepis forests—the highest altitude forest ecosystem in the world—on their lands.

In 2012, the partners agreed to work toward a long-term financing mechanism for conservation agreements in the Conchucos region. The goal is to help additional communities establish private conservation areas to protect Polylepis patches and other Andean ecosystems, and enhance connectivity between these conservation areas using conservation agreements. In particular, CI and Asociacíon Ancash will seek an endowment contribution from the Antamina mining company and promote the creation of a regional conservation agreement program for the Ancash Region.
