 Okavango Delta Expedition

June 17-21, 2000: Southeast of Chief's Island

Base Camp 4

  • This camp is located on one of the Delta’s many seasonally flooded islands.

  • Here in the southern part of the Delta, the islands are sometimes called sandveldt tongues.

  • These islands support vegetation and animal life more typical of the dry deciduous Kalahari woodlands to the east and north.

The handsome sable antelope, which lives in southeastern Africa's wooded savannas, is endangered due to poaching. Impala move easily through the shallow water between islands.
