Okavango Delta Expedition

June 6-9, 2000: Northern Panhandle

Dense vegetation lines the shores of the Panhandle, Okavango Delta Expedition

Base Camp 1

  • This camp is located on the main channel of the Okavango River, where the waters flow fast and wide.

  • At 650 feet wide and 13 feet deep, the river flows for 50 miles through the Panhandle, constrained by two parallel faults in the Earth’s crust.

  • Birds and bats are abundant, while the dense stands of papyrus that line the banks create a difficult habitat for large animals to navigate.
