Design for a Network of Protected Areas to Safeguard Marine Turtles in the Sulu Sulawesi Seascape

This report contains a design for a sea turtle protection network, recommended sites for inclusion in the network, and guidance on how the network of marine protected areas should function by 2010 and 2020 for effective science-based tri-national sea turtle conservation.

Developed through a partnership between Conservation International and Sabah-based organization Marine Research Foundation, this network design was approved in 2009 by the Tri-National Committee for Sulu-Sulawesi Marine Ecoregion (composed of environment/fishery agencies from the Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia).  In March 2010, CI convened the first meeting of the MPA management units to compose the core of the network in the SSS Sea Turtle Corridor. The initial agreement of the meeting was to include the following six existing MPAs in the network because of their significance:

  • Turtle Islands Wildlife Sanctuary (TIWS), Philippines – primary nesting area
  • Turtle Islands Park, Sabah – primary nesting area (same population as the green turtles in TIWS)
  • Sugud Islands Marine Conservation Area, Sabah – secondary nesting habitat
  • Tun Sakaran Park, Sabah
  • Sipadan Islands, Sabah – developmental and foraging habitat
  • Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park, Philippines – developmental and foraging habitat
