The Seascapes Guidebook (PDF - 11 MB)
Excerpt: "This document provides guidance to identify candidate Seascapes, select Seascapes for investment, and develop management strategies for selected Seascapes."
Related document: An Introduction to the Seascapes Approach (PDF - 8 MB)

Climate Change + the Oceans Policy Position (PDF - 5.3 MB)
Excerpt: "Immediate and substantial reductions in greenhouse gas emissions are needed to reduce the impacts of climate change on the oceans. These impacts – including warming ocean temperatures, sea level rise, ocean acidification, and changing ocean currents – will lead to major shifts in the diversity, abundance and distribution of life in the ocean."

Seascapes: A New Model for Ocean Governance (PDF - 2.5 MB)
Excerpt: "Over the last four years a new approach for building government, corporate and civil society coalitions aimed at improving ocean governance has been developed. Building upon on-theground experience, the Seascapes approach promotes comprehensive marine management and improved ocean health at scale by focusing on the achievement of nine essential elements."

Adapting to Climate Change: Marine Ecosystems (PDF - 379 KB)
Excerpt: "Climate change will impact marine ecosystems and coastal communities. Effective adaptation must address both marine ecosystems and coastal communities, and the connections between them. Immediate and substantial adaptation action is needed for people and marine ecosystems to survive and prosper. "

Vulnerability Assessment of the Verde Island Passage, Philippines (PDF - 311 KB)
Excerpt: "The Verde Island Passage in the Philippines has been described as the center of the world’s marine biodiversity. This 1.14 million hectare (2.82 million acre) marine area is a major tourist destination and one of the richest fishing grounds in the Philippines."

Vulnerability Assessment of the Galápagos Islands (PDF - 354 KB)
Excerpt: "The Galápagos Islands, located in the Eastern Tropical Pacific, 600 miles west of Ecuador, lie at the confluence of both warm and cold ocean currents. These unique conditions provide habitats for tropical species, such as corals and redfooted boobies, temperate species like sea lions and macro-algae (kelp), and coldwater species such as penguins and fur seals."

Books and newsletters

Seascapes in Focus
Read the current and past issues of Seascapes in Focus, a Conservation International publication of marine conservation news.

Defying Ocean's End
Defying Ocean's End was inspired by the need to address the sharp decline in ocean wildlife, the disturbing increase in ocean pollution and the neglect of policies and resources to solve these problems. This book is the result of a 2003 conference which identified seven key fields of action and inspired several conservation groups, including Conservation International, to work together to protect the ocean.

Annual Seascapes Strategy Workshop: A New Future For Marine Conservation

The aim of the Seascapes Workshops is to identify and communicate the successes and lessons learned by the Seascapes, measures for success, opportunities for scaling up Seascapes and for demonstrating the linkages between marine biodiversity and human well-being. These documents represent the final reports of the workshops.

Marine Management Area Science Program Science-to-Action Reports

Living With the Sea (PDF - 24.1MB)
Les Kaufman and John Tschirky

The first report, titled Living with the Sea examines the role of Marine Managed Areas in helping ocean species adapt, and even bounce back from, the increasing human impacts caused by global climate change and unsustainable development.

People and Oceans (PDF - 11.5MB)
Giselle Samonte, Leah Bunce Karrer, and Michael Orbach

In People and Oceans, scientists highlight the direct connection between a healthy ocean and human wellbeing, which include improved livelihoods, better food security, and increased support for cultural traditions.

Marine Managed Areas: What, why, where (PDF - 22.1MB)
Michael Orbach and Leah Bunce Karrer

The third report, Marine Managed Areas: What, Why, and Where lays out a roadmap to successfully implement and navigate the challenges of new MMAs.
