In recent years the Rooibos industry has increasingly been exposed to the worldwide movement towards ethical and sustainable production practices. The loss of biodiversity in what is internationally recognized as a biodiversity hotspot – the Cape Floral Kingdom, which includes the Cederberg – and the part Rooibos production plays in that loss were the catalysts that prompted the industry to launch the Rooibos Biodiversity Initiative in 2007.

Potatoes are one of South Africa’s most affordable staple foods and are capable of being grown on less land and in harsher climates than cereal crops. However, potato farming has significant impact on South Africa’s biodiversity through land transformation and intensive water usage. In response the potato industry has initiated a sustainable potato growing project in the Western Cape.

The GreenChoice Farmer Field Book is a farm monitoring system that allows reporting on both crop and biodiversity activities. It is a tool based loosely on the Farmer Field Book concept developed by Plant Research International and Kuit Consulting. It was developed into its present form, which includes biodiversity.
 
Sustainable food production and supply is a key challenge of the 21st Century. The unprecedented pressure of climate change, increasing water scarcity and land degradation coupled with growing demand has brought the era of cheap, abundant food to an end. And, as is so often the case, the impacts have been most severely felt by the poorest and most vulnerable people.
 
This list tells you about which seafood species are legal and more sustainable choices. The species included on the list have been assessed by considering the stock status, the environmental effects of fishing and the management in place to reduce these effects or maintain the stock at healthy levels.
 
Being custodians of the land, farmers have a responsibility to the natural and social environment they live in. They are also increasingly confronted with pressures downstream in the value chain, consumers and the public at large. Although sometimes perceived as negative, these contribute to longer term stability, social and environmental sustainability, and food security with positive consequences to the sustainability and profitability of the enterprise.

Over the centuries, South Africa has established a proud heritage of farming. Today’s farmers ensure that the country’s growing population is self-sufficient in virtually all major agricultural products, while producing more than half of southern Africa’s maize requirements and exporting many agricultural products to the world. But times are changing. Farmers are under increasing pressure to intensify their agricultural outputs to meet rising food demands and are faced with looming threats of a changing climate.
