Peter Seligmann, CI’s Chairman and CEO, participated as a conservation and business leader panelist at the Avoided Deforestation Partners REDD+ event on December 7 at COP 17 in Durban. Dr. Jane Goodall co-hosted the event along with one of ADP founding partners, Jeff Horowitz. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon kicked off the event by delivering the keynote address that included an urgent call to end global deforestation.
The event highlighted innovative solutions that protect the world’s forests and environment by supporting economic growth through sustainable, climate smart agriculture. The event also featured tributes to Professor Wangari Maathai, the late Nobel Peace Prize laureate, with special video addresses from President Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and former President Bill Clinton.
Peter Seligmann spoke about the important work that CI is doing with corporate partners. He emphasized the need for non-profits to partner with businesses to help reduce global dependency on land management practices that result in deforestation, including support for smallholder farmers to assist them in transitioning from non-sustainable to sustainable practices.
