CI is pioneering is an initiative in Indonesia, the Sustainable Landscapes Partnership (SLP), which is an innovative public-private partnership focused on developing proof-of-concept REDD+ and low emissions development projects.
The SLP began as a partnership among CI, USAID, The Walton Family Foundation and the Government of Indonesia, with $20 million in funding over a five-year period. The goals of the SLP are to conserve more than five million hectares of high-biodiversity habitat in Indonesia — home to the Critically Endangered Sumatran orangutan (Pongo abelii) — and to prevent more than 100 million tons of CO2 emissions through conservation and sustainable management of tropical forest and peat landscapes, as well as to support the creation of markets for sustainably sourced products and supply chain efforts.
An Associates Committee of private sector companies (local, national and international) will make specific low emission investment recommendations, incorporating world-wide trends and best practices, so that the SLP can target projects that have a confirmed market demand.
