World Water Week 2012

A team of seven staff members from CI attended the 2012 World Water Week conference that took place in Stockholm, Sweden, this past August, participating in the sessions, side events and meetings.

CELB's Marielle Canter Weikel, Director of Corporate Freshwater Strategies, co-presented the major trends and ideas related to the theme of “Building a Water Wise Economy” at the closing plenary session, which provided an excellent opportunity to show CI’s engagement in the nexus between water, food and energy and how that relates to sound business practices.

One session from the conference on water and climate adaptation in the private sector — "A new climate for business: Seeking profits in a shifting waterscape" — featured Marielle alongside representatives from the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, the United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative, Ceres, Citi, Nestlé, Coca-Cola, Pepsi and Veolia.

Marielle’s also authored a blog about something that many of us probably take for granted: the water footprint of certain foods people eat every day. Did you know that it takes roughly 1,850 gallons of water to bring a piece of steak to your plate? In comparison, it takes about 81 gallons of water to create a drumstick of chicken.
