Jan Mol

Originally from Holland, Jan has lived in Suriname for 15 years.
"I decided to come here both for the fish and human populations. The Surinamese are more social than people in Holland, and the climate is better."

Jan tells about the best of science: "The most exciting thing for me as a biologist was seeing the sea turtles in Suriname come out of the sea. They are large, one to one and a half meters, and so courageous coming out of the water. At night, under the moonshine, it was really an experience."

And the worst of science: "I stayed a night in a boat because the army ants attacked camp and they got into my hammock and I couldn't sleep!"

His advice for young scientists: "Go into the field for the first time with an experienced field biologist and local people as well. Many small things can discourage you if you don't know about them and you need someone to help you: how to tie your hammock, how to make camp. I was lucky to go with an experienced biologist."
