Arnhold’s mouse lemur

This species was named after Henry Arnhold who has supported worldwide conservation efforts with a particular emphasis on the link between the environment and human well-being. As mouse lemurs go, this particular individual was of medium size – which still means it’s pretty small. They can be found in the rainforests of NW Madagascar particularly in mountainous areas.

It has a mostly red head with dark brown coloration around its muzzle and eyes. Like all species of mouse lemur, it has a white stripe between its eyes and is forest dwelling – occurring in a wide range of different habitats. They feed on both plants and animals; their diets can be quite varied and can change throughout the year. They eat insects, fruits, buds and flowers. The biggest threat to their survival remains the destruction of the forests where they live.

Scientific Name

Microcebus arnholdi

Where

This mouse lemur was discovered in Madagascar in the Province of Antsiranana, Montagne d’Ambre National Park and Montagne d’Ambre Special Reserve. Like all species of lemur, they can only be found in Madagascar.

When

November 2005

Field Notes

This species is only found in one location and has a very small range. It is at risk due to the potential of deforestation in the area.
