CI strives to exercise the highest level of stewardship over donor contributions and we are proud to earn accolades for our financial management. CI was listed in Charity Navigator’s list, “10 of the Best Charities Everyone’s Heard Of.”
CI also earned an “A” efficiency rating from the American Institute of Philanthropy for the 11th year in a row, with 84 percent of expenses directly supporting conservation programs and just 5 percent supporting fundraising efforts.

Net Assets
CI closed the year with a modest $1.4 million unrestricted operating surplus, most of which will be added to our reserves. Unrestricted reserves are extremely important to CI, as income generated by these reserves funds our conservation programs in future years and provides us with flexible funding necessary to respond to urgent needs.
The $59 million increase in temporarily restricted net assets resulted from the receipt of several significant multiyear pledges. CI closed the year with a total $197 million in temporarily restricted net assets, which are funds earmarked for specific conservation programs to be implemented in future years.
During the year, CI received contributions totaling $152,000 to our endowment fund, bringing the total endowment to just over $13 million. Earnings from this endowment are used to fund environmental education and training, field programs and general operations.
IN DEPTH:
Revenue
- CI raised more than $176 million in revenue, a 63 percent increase over FY06 levels.These results make FY07 the second-most successful fundraising year in our 21-year history.
- We received renewal funding for programs that support our core mission, including our regional Centers for Biodiversity Conservation and our growing seascape program.
- CI received a commitment from l’Agence Française de Développement (AFD), totaling 19.5 million Euros over five years, to support the expansion of the Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund (CEPF), a joint initiative of CI, AFD, the Global Environment Facility, the Government of Japan, the MacArthur Foundation and the World Bank.
Expenses
- Expenses totaled $118 million in FY07, remaining relatively consistent with FY06 levels.
- We continue to invest the majority of our funding (59 percent) in our regional programs and Centers for Biodiversity Conservation in the Neotropics, Africa and Madagascar and the Asia Pacific, which take strategic actions to protect the places that are most important for biodiversity conservation, human well-being and climate change mitigation.
- During FY07, CI awarded $30 million, representing 26 percent of our budget, in grants to partners.
