The Technical Web Producer is a critical member of the content production team for Conservation.org with unique expertise in web technologies, including HTML, CSS, JavaScript. This position serves as a liaison between information systems, design, and editorial teams and is responsible for supporting the technical + editorial excellence of Conservation International's flagship website and subsidiary consumer-facing websites, applications, and products. The Technical Web Producer will work directly with the Editorial Web Producer to coordinate, prepare, and publish compelling web content to Conservation.org, maintain existing and archived content, and execute an editorial calendar of engaging and interactive content, including chats, blogs, and forums. This requires regular coordination with Visual Resources, Media, and Editorial teams. Additionally, s/he will support the Web Development Manager and Director of Web Strategy as needed in scoping, producing, and executing new web products. This position is a key component of CI's Digital Strategies Team and functions to support the team in its promotion of our brand across digital platforms and achievement of divisional fundraising and site traffic goals.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The primary responsibility of this position is to produce compelling web content and co-manage Conservation.org. With the Editorial Web Producer, and under the direct supervision of the Director of Web Strategy + Branding, maintain and execute an integrated and strategic editorial calendar of site publishes, e-newsletter distributions, and CI Live or other interactive, online events. Ensure that all content meets CI scientific and web usability standards, make site changes upon request and serve to help grow the site over time.

Help organize and conduct CI Live discussions; explore new opportunities and technologies for interactive engagement on Conservation.org, including blogs and forums.

Help to write, produce and distribute CI eNews Updates and other editorial e-mail communications to a growing list of ~100,000 subscribers.

Work directly with the Online Marketing and Promotions Coordinator to optimize our use of language and keywords online to boost search engine indexing and promote CI content.     

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Experience:

A four-year degree in information systems, web development, or a related field is necessary, as is working knowledge of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Photoshop, and content management systems.

The ideal candidate has 3-5 years of working experience with previous responsibility for website production or development.

Required Skills:

This position is both technical and editorial. It requires a keen interest in emerging web technologies and user expectations, good editorial judgment and creativity, as well as a sharp eye for detail and page layout. The Technical Web Producer complements the Editorial Web Producer by bringing a uniquely technical or computer savvy skills set to the table. S/he should have:

  • Strong writing skills and excellent attention to detail 
  • Web production experience, including HTML authoring and photo editing
  • An understanding of good web design and information architecture
  • A working knowledge of content management systems 

The Technical Web Producer must demonstrate experience and comfort in operating in a fact-paced, deadline-oriented setting, as well as the ability to work well in a small team. S/he will be a self-starter, trustworthy, detailed, largely autonomous, and quick to learn.
