Conservation International's Center for Environmental Leadership in Business (CELB) works to engage the private sector as a positive force for the world's natural heritage. The Center's vision is that industry leaders will become champions of nature conservation by reducing the ecological impact of their operations, harnessing the power of their supply chains to drive widespread adoption of good practices, dedicating financial resources to on-the-ground conservation initiatives, and communicating about results to consumers, shareholders and employees.

Conservation International is seeking a senior-level leader with extensive experience in business and environmental sustainability, corporate social responsibility, and business strategy from a corporate, consulting, academic, public sector, or non-governmental organization background. The Senior Director must have a sophisticated understanding of environmental issues in a business context, be an independent and creative thinker with excellent written and verbal communication skills, and posess a highly developed ability to synthesize and communicate information to corporations and other stakeholder groups.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The position of Senior Director, Business Policies & Practices is a key expert role within CELB requiring skills and knowledge critical for the success of the Center's strategies, projects and relationships with major corporattions and other partners.  Basic responsibilities of the position nclude:

  • CELB Strategy: The Senior Director will lead the Center's Business Policies & Practices program, with emphasis on development of corporate environmental strategies that include "game changing" actions and major revenue commitments in support of CI priorities related to biodiversity conservation and climate change solutions. The Senior Director will serve on the  CELB Strategy and Account Teams, and advise the CELB management team and other program heads within the division on integration of technical expertise into CELB activities. The Senior Director will contribute to development of the division's budgets, work plans and business plans.
  • Project Development and Implementation:  The Senior Director will oversee design and management of major initiatives under the CELB Business Policies & Practices strategy line. The successful candidate will directly supervise a team of project managers and technical specialists, and will oversee certain activities of other staff with "dotted line" reporting relationships to the Senior Director.  
  • Account relationships: The Senior Director will serve as one of CELB's principal staff members responsible for day-to-day stewardship of major accounts, including regular contact on strategic, financial and programmatic issues with senior-level counterparts at major corporations engaged with CI. 
  • Coordination and Communication:  The Senior Director will communicate regularly and openly with members of “Account-specific teams” comprising various CI staff members involved with particular corporate relationships. The Senior Director will create a collegial and respectful work environment, and will engage everyone within CI and partner organizations needed for success in carrying out the expert responsibilities of the position.  

Working Conditions:  Frequent travel, e.g., 25%, to headquarters of corporate and NGO partners and to CI/CELB project sites in the field

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required Skills:

  • At least ten years senior-level experience working on environmental issues in corporate, consulting, academic, government, or NGO sectors
  • Demonstrated understanding of global perspectives on corporate social responsibility
  • Expertise in environmental policies and practices, sustainable development, and accountability and transparency
  • Excellent track record in research and writing on environmental topics in business or academic settings through published reports, articles or contributions to significant company projects
  • Skilled at developing ideas and models, synthesizing data, anticipating future trends, and packaging or presenting the information in ways that are useful and meaningful to corporate audiences and key stakeholders
  • Demonstrated leadership and vision in managing staff groups and major projects or initiatives
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a collaborative management style
  • Budget development and oversight experience
  • Comfort operating in an entrepreneurial environment and a demonstrated commitment to high professional ethical standards and a diverse workplace

Preferred Skills:

With Bachelor's degree, advanced studies relevant to the job responsibilities preferred.  The advanced studies are important to demonstrate deep and wide knowledge of business and environment, corporate social responsibility, and environmental and social issues relating to oil and gas, mineral, agricultural, tourism, and financial industries.
